MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a black comedy about the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army Afghanistan veteran at odds with her family, to find Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend. Army. Despite the persistence of her VA group counselor (Morgan Freeman), the love of her strict mother (Gloria Reuben), and an unexpected love affair, Merita’s cozy and dysfunctional friendship with Zoe protects the duo from the world. . Until things go awry at Merritt’s grandfather’s (Ed Harris), who lived in the family’s ancestral lake house, and he needs the one thing he refuses to give up: help. Essentially, it’s a buddy movie about complicated friendships, a dysfunctional family, and the complex ways we deal with grief.
